In an effort to raise early detection rates for lung cancer and enhance patient prognosis, NHS England is to make screening for the disease available to everyone who has ever smoked. The Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care announced the targeted national lung cancer screening program earlier this week. Using patients’ GP records, the program will identify current and former smokers between the ages of 55 and 74. People who are thought to be at high risk for cancer will be invited for specialized scans every two years after their smoking history and other factors are taken into account.
